Our school children are learning about injury prevention through an exciting program called RiskWatch. Developed by the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), RiskWatch is a comprehensive curriculum designed to give children in preschool through grade eight the information and support they need to make positive choices about their personal safety and well-being. The program targets the top eight risk areas for this age group:
Why is it so important to teach kids about safety? Because each year, more school-age children are disabled and die from unintentional injuries than from kidnapping, drugs, and disease combined. These are tragedies that affect not just the child and family, but his or her classmates, friends, and the community as a whole.
The good news is there’s something we can all do. By teaching children how to recognize and avoid the things that put them most at risk, we can help them lead fuller and more productive lives.
